Your First Kung Fu Class
Congratulations on taking the first step. Here’s a list of things you should be aware of for your first class:
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the class starts. This allows us to meet with you to explain a little about our history and how the class operates and then pair you up with a training buddy.
New people are paired with a senior to ensure they get the best attention during the class.
Wear loose fitting long pants and a plain t-shirt. No shorts, singlet tops, or offensive markings/alcohol advertising.
You can bring a drink bottle if you wish or purchase one on site.
If you come with an open mind and a good attitude you will enjoy yourself.
We welcome you to your own martial arts journey.
The Kung Fu School Horowhenua (Levin) was founded by Simo in 1999 and is now taught by Gow Lian Hanson.
Being the first school to open in New Zealand outside of Palmerston North, The Kung Fu School Horowhenua (Levin) has a long history spanning over 10 years. The School has had a number of students over these years, many of whom have gone on to open and run their own Nam Pai Chuan (NPC) schools.
The Levin School started at Fairfield School, and has continually supported the School and community with demonstrations, seminars, and Kung Fu school programs. In mid 2016 the school moved venues to Playford Park Clubrooms on Bartholomew Road in Levin.
Classes themselves are open to all age and ability groups, with a focus on functional fitness, self-discipline and personal development.
The Kung Fu School Horowhenua has children and adults classes held on Wednesday and Friday.
Each class is varied and while we like to work hard, we also like to have fun. The Horowhenua School caters to many towns in the Horowhenua including Foxton, Waitarere, Shannon and Ohau.
Hi, my name is Lance Hanson and I am the instructor for Foxton and Levin.
I started kung-fu in 2011 after friends of mine told me they had been going to classes. I took my daughter along to try a class, we both joined and have been training ever since. I love the family atmosphere at kung-fu, everyone is supportive and encouraging no matter what your age or ability level is.
I have continued to train for all these years because I am constantly being pushed and learning new things. I love the passion that Sigung and the other instructors show when they teach a class and I try to show this in my teaching. I have been able to train with Tai Sigung Lai and other senior students on their visits to New Zealand and travel around New Zealand to attend demonstrations and gradings.
I spent time after obtaining my black belt as an assistant instructor in the Levin school to develop my teaching skills and I am excited to now be running the school. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and like seeing them learn, grow and succeed. I would encourage you to come along and try a class, you have nothing to lose and you might just find a new passion like I did.
