Your First Kung Fu Class
Congratulations on taking the first step. Here’s a list of things you should be aware of for your first class:
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the class starts. This allows us to meet with you to explain a little about our history and how the class operates and then pair you up with a training buddy.
New people are paired with a senior to ensure they get the best attention during the class.
Wear loose fitting long pants and a plain t-shirt. No shorts, singlet tops, or offensive markings/alcohol advertising.
You can bring a drink bottle if you wish or purchase one on site.
If you come with an open mind and a good attitude you will enjoy yourself.
We welcome you to your own martial arts journey.
Welcome to the Kung Fu School Wellington – Miramar.
The school runs a children’s class (ages 7 – 12) and an adult’s class (13+).
We offer the opportunity to learn Shaolin Kung to the Eastern Suburbs including Miramar, Seatoun, Strathmore, Breaker Bay, Rongotai, Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay and Hataitai.
The Miramar School encourages anyone with any level of martial arts experience to have a go. A typical class starts off with a warm up, with exercises that:
Increases fitness and conditioning
Builds flexibility and coordination
Develops strength and power
Warms the muscles to prevent injury
After we are adequately warmed and stretched we move into teaching techniques found in our syllabus which focuses on movement, application and self defence.
The Kung Fu School is a family orientated martial art with a focus on support of our students learning and providing a challenging and ability appropriate training ethic.
The best way to find out if this is something for you is to come down and have a chat with one of our seniors and experience it for yourself. We are always willing to assist you in any way we can.
My name is Dmitry Alkhimov and I started training in Nam Pai Chuan Kung Fu in 2010 in Brooklyn School under Sifu Rob Young.
Having no previous martial arts experience, I was looking for a martial art that is solid, expressive, and practical. With a good foundation to build myself up and systematise unstructured acts of fitness and will. Nam Pai Chuan Kung Fu looked like it would provide just that and have lived up to my expectations and more.
My first few months training are best described as ‘strategic survival’ from one training session to the next. Which sounds worse than it was in reality.
I was introduced to sparring classes and enjoyed their fun and challenging way of applying what I’ve learned in class.
In 2015 I have achieved my 1st degree black belt. It taught me two things: there is no such thing as ‘enough’ skill – this is where the ‘art’ comes in – once you get good (hm.. okay-ish) at something, you immediately want to take it further. There is also never enough fitness… for all that skill that you want to express.
Teaching others what you have learned provides a strange satisfaction of reinforcing your own approach to learning, things you wish you knew, things that you’ve discovered in training. It is also part of our culture and is indispensable in building a strong and thriving martial arts club.
Anyone can learn Kung Fu! Training is fun, safe, teaches you valuable skills and gives you a sense of direction. It builds up on what you’ve learned last week, last month, last year. It’s a journey that lasts, and can carry you through challenges and open up new opportunities for you.
Come to a class and find out for yourself! Your kung fu journey begins when you’re ready.
