Your First Kung Fu Class
Congratulations on taking the first step. Here’s a list of things you should be aware of for your first class:
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the class starts. This allows us to meet with you to explain a little about our history and how the class operates and then pair you up with a training buddy.
New people are paired with a senior to ensure they get the best attention during the class.
Wear loose fitting long pants and a plain t-shirt. No shorts, singlet tops, or offensive markings/alcohol advertising.
You can bring a drink bottle if you wish or purchase one on site.
If you come with an open mind and a good attitude you will enjoy yourself.
We welcome you to your own martial arts journey.
Welcome to the Kung Fu School Freyberg, Palmerston North.
We have been running classes in Palmerston North for over 20 years and have now opened a second club in Palmerston North which offers a children’s class (ages 7 – 12) and an adult’s class (13+). We train in the Freyberg School Gymnasium (in the Roslyn area) and welcome new students.
We encourage anyone with any level of martial arts experience to have a go. A typical class starts off with a warm up, with exercises that:
Increase fitness and conditioning
Build flexibility and coordination
Develop strength and power
Warm the muscles to prevent injury
After we are adequately warmed and stretched we move into teaching techniques found in our syllabus which focuses on movement, application and self defence.
The Kung Fu School is a family orientated martial art with a focus on support of our students learning and providing a challenging and ability appropriate training ethic.
The best way to find out if this is something for you is to come down and have a chat with one of our seniors and experience it for yourself. We are always willing to assist you in any way we can.
I started Shaolin Kung-fu in 2002 at the age of 10, training with Si Gung at Song Shan hall in Kelvin Grove Palmerston North. My mother was surprised when I asked “Mum instead of going to ballet can I try Kung-Fu?” Luckily she agreed to take me along and I never gave ballet another thought.
As a shy and quiet child, Kung-fu helped to bring me out of my shell and hugely improved my self-esteem. I have formed many close and valued friendships over my time at kung-fu which I attribute to the family atmosphere that is promoted and felt within the class. As I have grown up and matured throughout my teenage years, kung-fu has always been an important part of my life. It has given me strength and determination as well as developing my confidence and self-esteem.
In 2010 when I began a degree in Psychology at Massey University in Palmerston North, I also started to teach a children’s class once a week in Palmerston North. This continued throughout the three years of my degree and was an extremely rewarding experience for me to be able to pass on my knowledge to young students and see them develop and improve. At the end of 2012, I took over the running of the Feilding school and have been teaching there ever since. Upon completing my bachelors degree, I went on to obtain a Master’s degree in Psychology, all the while training with Sigung and teaching classes.
Kung-fu has presented many wonderful opportunities for me. I have been lucky enough to travel overseas and all over New Zealand to assist with gradings and train with students.
When teaching, I try to make my classes as enjoyable and physically challenging as possible, while maintaining the family atmosphere and values which drew me to, and have kept me at Kung-fu for such a long time. Kung-fu is something which I am passionate about and I feel privileged to be able to pass on my passion through teaching my students.
If you are considering giving Kung-fu a go then my advice to you is to come along and try a class. I think that you will discover the many benefits of kung-fu, as well as improving your fitness, you get to enjoy yourself and make some great friends.
