Your First Kung Fu Class
Congratulations on taking the first step. Here’s a list of things you should be aware of for your first class:
Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the class starts. This allows us to meet with you to explain a little about our history and how the class operates and then pair you up with a training buddy.
New people are paired with a senior to ensure they get the best attention during the class.
Wear loose fitting long pants and a plain t-shirt. No shorts, singlet tops, or offensive markings/alcohol advertising.
You can bring a drink bottle if you wish or purchase one on site.
If you come with an open mind and a good attitude you will enjoy yourself.
We welcome you to your own martial arts journey.
Class bio coming soon
I started kung fu in January 2008, at the age of 10, training with Sifu O’Sullivan at headquarters in Palmerston North.
I was tricked into attending my first kung fu class after my friend failed to convince me that attending was a good idea! It only took that one class for me to become completely obsessed with kung fu! Now, over 10 years later, I can’t imagine my life without it.
Kung fu is where I have met all of my best friends, as well as a second family.
Kung fu has done wonders for my confidence, taught me self discipline and also, the value of hard work. (The term ‘kung-fu’ itself means success through effort.)
With a lot of that formentioned hard work – I received my junior black belt in 2013, at the age of 15. I received my 1st degree black belt a year later.
In my last year of high school I took over teaching the ‘pee wee’ class at HQ, Palmerston North. This is a kung fu class aimed toward children ages 4-7. Teaching this class definitely taught me to have a whole lot of patience!
I absolutely loved teaching this class and continued to do so until April of 2017; when I left New Zealand to travel the UK and Europe for 6 months.
Kung fu is greatly responsible for inspiring my love of travel – with kung fu I have not only been given the opportunity to travel nationally but also internationally, for training.
After my European adventure I returned to New Zealand and moved to Wellington, for work. Here I continued to teach and train across many of our kung fu schools.
After a kung fu school adventure to train primarily in Japan and Malaysia I will settle back down in Palmerston North, to pusue a Bachelor of Nursing.
This is where the Aokautere Kung-fu schools journey begins on September 4th 2018.
If you are even a teeny bit interested in kung fu, then I suggest you come along and try a FREE class! That way you can see for yourself all of the amazing things that kung fu has to offer you!
