Your First Kung Fu Class
Congratulations on taking the first step. Here’s a list of things you should be aware of for your first class:
Please arrive at least 5 minutes before the class starts. This allows us to meet with you to explain a little about our history and how the class operates and then pair you up with a training buddy.
New people are paired with a senior to ensure they get the best attention during the class.
Wear loose fitting long pants and a plain t-shirt.
No shorts, singlet tops, or offensive markings/alcohol advertising.
We suggest bringing a drink bottle for water breaks.
If you come with an open mind and a good attitude you will enjoy yourself.
We welcome you to your own martial arts journey.
Welcome to the Kung Fu School Mt Eden.
The school has been operating since 2011 and runs a children’s class (ages 7 – 12) and an adult’s class (13+). We started in the Mt Eden Normal Primary School and in 2015 moved to Kowhai Intermediate because of our growing class sizes.
We offer the opportunity to learn Shaolin Kung Fu to the Mt Eden, Kingsland, Epsom, Balmoral, Sandringham, Eden Terrace, and Three Kings suburbs.
The Mt Eden School encourages anyone with any level of martial arts experience to have a go. A typical class starts off with a warm up, with exercises that:
Increases fitness and conditioning
Builds flexibility and coordination
Develops strength and power
Warms the muscles to prevent injury
After we are adequately warmed and stretched we move into teaching techniques found in our syllabus which focuses on movement, application and self defence.
The Kung Fu School is a family orientated martial art with a focus on support of our students learning and providing a challenging and ability appropriate training ethic.
The best way to find out if this is something for you is to come down and have a chat with one of our seniors and experience it for yourself. We are always willing to assist you in any way we can.
My name is Craig Dewe and I’m the instructor of the Mt Eden club. The correct way to refer to me is Gow Lian (pronounced ‘Gow Lee-ann’) which simply means instructor. While we are a traditional martial art you will find yourself picking up the etiquette very quickly and we’re a friendly bunch.
I started Kung Fu in January 2004 with Sifu in Palmerston North. I’d never done a martial art before and got the idea from a friend who loved “The Matrix.” While he never showed up to class I found the courage to give it a go… having no idea how much it would positively impact my life.
I wanted to get fit, learn self defence and have more confidence… plus I’ll admit I thought kung fu in movies just looked pretty cool. I vividly remember doing these “strange” press-ups in my first class and I was able to do about 10 before my arms refused to lift me off the ground again. However I’m happy to say that changed quickly and soon I was amazing myself with just what I was capable of.
Kung fu also led to many unexpected benefits like improving my confidence and developing leadership abilities. It has helped me become the person I am today and I know that it will always have an important place in my life.
I moved to Auckland in 2008 and continued my training under Sifu Billington while working with the other seniors to develop and grow the Auckland clubs. In 2009 I successfully graded for my black belt and this remains one of my proudest accomplishments.
In 2013 I took over the Mt Eden club and over the last few years have watched it’s class numbers grow significantly. We currently have a children’s class of 25-30 every Tuesday and Thursday plus an adult’s class of 20-25.
I’ve always had a passion for teaching and started helping with the children’s classes back when I was a yellow belt. Without committed teachers none of us would be able to practice Shaolin Kung Fu which has been handed down from teacher to student for well over a thousand years. Therefore I put a lot of importance on students not just training hard… but learning how to become effective and passionate teachers as they progress because this is the way our art is shared.
When I found myself looking at this website back in 2004 I had absolutely no idea what lay in front of me. All I can do is encourage you to take the next step and try one of our classes… you never know where it may lead for you or your child. I couldn’t be happier I made that one little decision to try a kung fu class that day.
Thank you to Sifu, Simo, Sifu Billington and my fellow students for what you’ve contributed to my life. It continues to be an amazing journey.
